MADRID 8 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
At least ten people have died and five more have been injured this Monday in the collapse of a mine located in the Mumbwa district, in central Zambia, although the number of people who were at the scene of the events is unknown, due to which the toll of victims may increase in the coming days.
The commissioner of the Zambia Central Police, Charity Munganga Chanda, explained that “an unknown number of people went to carry out mining activities” in the morning, when “the earth collapsed on them”, as stated in a statement published by the police force on its profile on the social network Facebook.
The rescue efforts made it possible to rescue six injured miners, while the authorities immediately confirmed the death of nine. One of the injured later succumbed to his injuries at the Nangoma Mission Hospital, about a hundred kilometers from Mumbwa.
“Attempts are still being made to rescue the miners trapped in the rubble. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Mumbwa General Hospital, and the injured are receiving medical attention in Nangoma. The Police, in collaboration with other authorities, are working diligently to determine the exact number of people who were in the mine,” he stated.
