At least six migrants have lost their lives after the boat in which they were traveling sank off Morocco, as reported by the Moroccan News Agency (MAP).
“The local authorities of the province of Nador have reported that six people have drowned this Friday in an attempt to migrate illegally by sea, carried out from the coasts of the municipality of Izanen (Nador),” MAP has published on its Facebook account.
The agency has detailed in the same publication that some 54 people were traveling on board the boat when it collided with the rocks and the six people drowned. The other 48 survived despite the strong waves.
After notifying the accident, the local authorities have intervened to provide first aid to the survivors, remove the bodies of the deceased and comb the area in search of other potential victims.
The incident is already being investigated under the supervision of the Attorney General in order to clarify the background and circumstances surrounding the case.
