At least six people have died and 15 have been injured by firearms during the protests this Monday in the streets of Mozambique, as part of the political crisis that the country is experiencing after the elections of October 9 and coinciding with the taking of possession of the deputies in the National Assembly.
The figure has been provided by the electoral platform Decide, which has reported three deaths in the province of Zambezia and three more in Inhambane. This Monday’s protests are part of the three-day strike called by the followers of presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane on the eve of the inauguration this Wednesday of the new president, Daniel Chapo.
Decide has specified in a message on its account on the social network Facebook that since the beginning of the demonstrations at the end of October, there have already been more than 300 deaths as a result of the repression of the security forces, in addition to 600 injured, the the vast majority of them for firearms, and up to 4,220 detained, the last two this Monday in Maputo, the capital.
This Monday, the Police used tear gas and live fire to break up the demonstrations that had been organized to protest the inauguration of the new deputies of the Assembly, in an event in which the opposition parties were not present, except for the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Vamos), which supported Mondlane in the elections.
Podemos’s participation in the event has been described as “betrayal” by Mondlane himself and by his followers, when the first accusations of bribery against the leadership of the party, which has gone from being extra-parliamentary to being the main force of the opposition after October 9.
The electoral commission gave victory to Chapo, of the ruling Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo) in the elections of October 9, 2024 with 65 percent of the votes, well ahead of the 24 percent obtained by Mondlane, who He claims to have won with 53 percent of the ballots.

The United Nations has once again expressed its concern about the development of the political crisis in Mozambique during these months and has demanded that local authorities respect the fundamental rights of those who are participating in the protests, on the eve of the inauguration this Wednesday. by Daniel Chapo.
“It is essential that freedom of peaceful assembly be respected and facilitated, and that security forces refrain from making unnecessary or disproportionate use of force,” claimed the spokesperson for the United Nations Human Rights Office, Seif. Magango.
Likewise, it has urged interested parties to “take measures to reduce tension and peacefully resolve any electoral conflict,” as well as state authorities to investigate the abuses that have been committed in recent months.
“Let those responsible be brought to justice,” said Magango, who has made all United Nations mechanisms available to Mozambique to guarantee accountability for those who have committed abuses, as well as the fundamental rights of its population.
“Human Rights are fundamental to creating sustainable solutions, addressing injustices and addressing the root causes of conflicts”, in addition to being “the basis of sustainable development, peace and security”, he said.
