At least seven people have been killed and another wounded after gunmen fired on a peace delegation convoy in Lafon County, South Sudan.
Local authorities have indicated that the victims, who were men between the ages of 35 and 65, were returning after peace negotiations between two communities.
According to the Eye Radio station, the convoy came across a large log of wood on the road, when several people approached and began shooting at the vehicle.
Likewise, James Angelo Ayonyang, a member of the state parliament representing Lafon, has urged the competent authorities to identify and arrest the attackers, condemning this “unfortunate attack.”
“I urge the Government to identify the criminals and bring them to justice because we do not want this to happen again. I also ask the Executive to bring some (security) forces to the area to calm the situation,” he declared.
South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011, after decades of conflict and a referendum. Barely two years later, the country was plunged into a bloody civil war that resulted in thousands of deaths.
