At least seven dead in a suicide attack near a military academy in the capital of Somalia

MADRID 18 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least seven people, including soldiers and civilians, have been killed and six others have been injured in a suicide attack carried out this Thursday by the group Al Shabaab, linked to the terrorist organization Al Qaeda, near a military academy in the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu.

The Police have confirmed that the attack occurred around 3:30 p.m. (local time). “A suicide bomber blew himself up in a suburb where residents were staying under trees,” he said in a statement reported by the Somali news portal Hiiraan Online.

Al Shabaab has indicated that the attack “was carried out by a veteran” and “was directly aimed at officers and soldiers.” According to him, the terrorist crossed the planned checkpoints and the operation was carried out within the facilities. He has also indicated that he has killed 15 people and injured another twelve.

Somalia has increased offensives against Al Shabaab in recent months with the support of local clans and militias as part of a series of decisions taken by the president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who promised upon taking office in May 2022 to put the fight against terrorism in the center of their efforts to stabilize the African country.
