At least one policeman killed and another wounded in an attack on a police station in southern Turkey

Turkey’s Interior Minister, Suleyman Soylu, announced on Monday night that one policeman was killed and another was injured in an attack on the police station in the city of Mersin, in the south of the country.

Several individuals got out of a vehicle that was approaching the police station and opened fire on the agents around 11:00 p.m. local time (10:00 p.m. Spanish peninsular time). A large number of police, health and fire reinforcements have moved to the scene of the event.

Soylu, after moving to the area of ​​the incident, explained that both agents were transferred to hospitals, where one of the victims has died, since he was seriously injured. The second member of the armed forces is receiving treatment at the hospital and his life is not in danger.

In addition, another of the victims is a woman, who was hit by the bullet while sitting on a balcony. “Fortunately her life is not in danger, we have information that her surgery is over,” said the minister.

The Ministry of the Interior has reported that a suspect has been arrested in possession of his weapon. “Efforts continue to capture the perpetrators of the attack,” the ministerial portfolio detailed in a statement collected by the Turkish agency Anadolu.

For his part, Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag has stated that the Attorney General’s office has launched an investigation into the attack.

The interior minister has blamed people linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), after being questioned by journalists.

“Our nation, everyone should know that whoever has a link to this incident and whoever caused these terrorists to come here, we will find them,” Soylu added.
