MADRID Dec. 14 () –
At least one migrant has died and nearly 40 have disappeared due to a shipwreck off the coast of Greece, although dozens of people have managed to be rescued by the country’s Coast Guard.
The boat in which they were traveling has sunk about 12 nautical miles (about 19 kilometers) from the Greek island of Crete, according to information from the ERT television network.
The country’s authorities have launched a search and rescue operation near Gavdos, located further south, and have confirmed that they have the help of an Italian frigate, which is already operating in the area.
Migrant arrivals in Greece have increased by 25 percent this year as conflicts intensify, especially from the Middle East.
Around a hundred people have died on the Eastern Mediterranean Sea migratory route in 2024, including thirteen children, according to data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This figure amounts to more than 1,600 deaths taking into account the Western and Central Mediterranean routes, the latter being the deadliest of the three.
