At least one dead and four injured in train derailment in Norway

MADRID 24 Oct. () –

At least one person has died and four have been injured in a derailment of a train heading to Bodo, in northeastern Norway, possibly caused by falling rocks, authorities reported this Thursday.

“It appears that a rockfall caused the derailment. The E6 is currently closed,” said the police chief of the Nordland district, where the events occurred, Bent Are Eilertsen, as reported by Norwegian public television NRK.

The Police have confirmed the death of one person and four injuries, one of them seriously. The train was headed to the northern city of Bodo when it derailed around 2:15 p.m. local time near Finneidfjord.

“There were 55 people on board the train when it derailed. Everyone is out,” Eilersten added two hours after the incident. The railroad will remain closed for several days pending investigations, cleanup and damage repair. The authorities have also provided a reception center for evacuees and family members.

One of the passengers told the aforementioned media: “I was sitting in the car that was closest. It also derailed, but it didn’t go downhill. It was a very dramatic experience because I knew there were children up ahead, but I helped get them out.”
