September 9 () –
Italian authorities reported on Monday that one mountaineer has died and four others have been injured in an avalanche on the Castore peak, located in the Monte Rosa massif in the Pennine Alps, in northern Italy.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred in the early afternoon. Due to bad weather, rescue teams were unable to reach the site by air, so a team of rescuers had to travel by land.
Once the emergency services reached the scene, they located four injured people, who were taken to a shelter and from there flown by helicopter to a hospital in the town of Aosta.
Three other climbers have been transferred to Cervinia and are at the disposal of the Guardia di Finanza to provide information useful in determining the causes of the incident, according to information collected by AdnKronos.
