At least nine members of the same family have died when the roof of their house collapsed in the city of Chilas, in the province of Gilgit-Baltistan, in the Pakistani Himalayan region.
A police spokesman, Taj Muhammad, explained that the roof collapsed early this Sunday morning, burying nine members of the family of Faraz Jan, owner of the house, reports the Pakistani newspaper ‘Dawn’.
Among the deceased are the man’s wife, four daughters and four sons — all of them between 2 and 12 years old — who were left under the rubble of the building. The man, who works as a waiter, was not home at the time.
Neighbors in the area immediately began to work on the debris after hearing noise under the rubble and after two hours of work they managed to recover the bodies, all lifeless.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed regret over the accident. “We share the sorrow of the affected family and send them our condolences,” Sharif said on Twitter.
