Aug. 28 (EUROPA PRESS) –
At least four soldiers and 25 suspected terrorists, including their leader, have died in several military operations that have taken place throughout the week in the region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a former stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban.
The Pakistan Army Press Office (ISPR) said in a statement posted on its website that security forces had “conducted extensive intelligence-based operations” which had “resulted in major setbacks.” In addition, of the 25 suspects killed, 11 other suspected terrorists were injured.
The announcement came a day after the country suffered a wave of violence perpetrated by the separatist armed group Balochistan Liberation Army against police posts, military personnel and civilian vehicles in several parts of the southwestern province of Balochistan, which left more than 60 people dead, including 19 security forces officers.
Pakistani security forces have carried out dozens of operations in recent months against the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), known as the Pakistani Taliban, which has been responsible for dozens of attacks on security forces since the ceasefire was broken in November 2022.
The TTP, which differs from the Afghan Taliban on organizational matters but follows the same strict interpretation of Sunni Islam, represents more than a dozen Islamist militant groups operating in Pakistan, where they have killed some 70,000 people in two decades of violence.
