At least four people have died and nearly 100 have been injured in Japan by Typhoon Shanshan, according to a count by local media, which indicate that two other people are missing due to the storm, which has been marked by heavy rain and winds.
The Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, the country’s largest newspaper, updated the toll early Friday morning, stating that three people were trapped in a landslide in Aichi Prefecture and an 80-year-old man died when the roof of his house collapsed in Tokushima Prefecture.
An elderly man who was watching a river went missing in Fukuoka Prefecture on Thursday night, while a 64-year-old man who was steering a small boat was shipwrecked off the coast of Kagoshima City.
The typhoon has weakened since it made landfall the day before, but heavy rains continue on the archipelago’s main island, Kyushu, where more than 800 millimetres of precipitation have been reported. However, the Japanese meteorological agency has called for strict vigilance in the face of possible landslides and river flooding. In this context, flights and trains have seen their services cancelled for safety reasons.
