At least four dead after a double attack near the capital of Mali

3 Jan. (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least four dead after a double attack on Monday by unidentified armed individuals against Malian Army positions at a tollbooth in Kassela and at a fire station in Markakongo, in the Kulikoró region, near the capital.

Several armed individuals aboard three motorcycles attacked Malian Army positions on Monday night, resulting in at least four deaths, including two civilians. In addition, the bandits would have taken a vehicle and burned two others, as reported by local media on Tuesday.

Although the two armed attacks, which have not yet been commented on by the Malian authorities, have not been claimed by any terrorist group, the double attack could be the work of the branch of the Al Qaeda group in Mali.

Last July, the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM) claimed responsibility for the death of a French soldier in an attack carried out in the town of Gossi, located in the north of the African country.

Mali and the rest of the Sahel countries have experienced an upsurge in violence, both jihadist at the hands of groups linked to Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, and inter-communal in nature, which has led France and the G5 Sahel countries — Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger– to increase their operations.
