At least five soldiers from the Niger Armed Forces have died in an explosion that occurred in the Tillabéri region, in the west of the African country, a province located near the border with Burkina Faso and Mali.

Security sources consulted by the Actuniger news portal have indicated that the attack took place this Monday afternoon and that there are also several more wounded soldiers, who have been transferred to the hospital, although they have not provided a precise balance.

At the same time, gunmen attacked a village near the town of Kokoru, in the Téra region, killing thirteen civilians, while others were injured. The day before, these individuals had attacked other villages located in the surrounding area.

The sources consulted, who suspect that the attackers are members of the affiliate of the Islamic State jihadist group in the Sahel, have reported that the alleged terrorists loot businesses and premises, steal livestock and generate fear in the population, who are forced to flee. area.

In recent years, this region, in which the branches of Al Qaeda and the Islamic State operate, has suffered an increase in insecurity, with attacks against the military and the civilian population, a situation that adds to a new political crisis after the coup of Status as of July 2023. Recently, the Army has intensified military operations in this area with air strikes, sometimes in coordination with the Armed Forces of its neighboring countries.
