At least five soldiers killed in an attack in northern Niger

At least five Nigerien Army soldiers have been killed, five have been wounded and two more are missing after an attack by armed individuals against a convoy of miners near the Tagharaba-Aelit highway, in the Agadez region, in the north of the country. .

The attack took place on Sunday against a convoy of miners escorted by the military from the Tchibarakaten gold extraction area that was moving towards Arlit, reports the Actu Niger portal.

The miners’ convoy was ambushed by heavily armed unknown persons who attacked the escorts. They returned fire and pursued the group of attackers only to be ambushed even more.

The authorities are investigating whether the attackers took part of the gold that the convoy was transporting through this region, located near the border with Algeria and Libya and the object of legal and illegal trafficking and where there are groups of bandits.

On the other hand, the Fluvial Customs Brigade has reported the seizure of a shipment of 400 packages of marijuana of Indian origin and 200 tablets of diazepam and other psychotropics in the Gulf of Guinea region.
