September 9 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Moroccan Ministry of the Interior has confirmed the death of eleven people, one of them a foreigner – whose nationality has not been specified – following floods caused by heavy rainfall in several regions of the country that have also left nine missing.
The ministry’s spokesman, Rachid El Jalfi, said that seven deaths had been recorded in Tata province, two in Tiznit and two in Errachidia, where one of the victims was a foreign citizen, according to the Moroccan state news agency, MAP.
He explained that the rainfall recorded in the last two days is almost half of what the region experiences throughout the year.
In fact, areas such as Batata (250 millimetres of water), Tinghir (203 millimetres), Figuig (114 millimetres) or Ouarzazate (82 millimetres) have exceeded the usual annual amount of rainfall.
The heavy rains have already caused the collapse of 40 houses – 24 of them completely -, the partial collapse of four medium-sized technical facilities and the closure of 93 sections of road due to damage.
In addition, the electricity, water and telephone networks have been damaged in some areas, although the authorities are already working to solve the problems and support the population, especially in those places that have been isolated.
Finally, the spokesperson asked the population to take extreme precautions and avoid behaviour that could put their lives in danger.
