Kabul (AFP) – The suicide attack perpetrated on Friday at a training center for students in Kabul caused at least 53 deaths, including 46 girls and women, according to a new balance released Monday by the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (MANUA).

“Fifty-three dead, at least 46 girls and young women. 110 injured,” the mission said on Twitter. A previous balance reported 43 deaths.

A suicide bomber blew himself up on Friday outside a gender-segregated study hall in a Kabul neighborhood where members of the marginalized Shiite Hazara community live.

Hundreds of students were taking practice before university entrance exams when the attacker detonated the explosive.

No group has claimed responsibility for the action, but the Islamic State (IS) jihadist organization, which regards Shiites as heretics, has carried out several deadly attacks in the area.

More than 100 Afghan women students demonstrated this Sunday in the city of Herat (western Afghanistan) in protest against this suicide attack.

“Education is our right, genocide is a crime,” intoned the Herat protesters, mostly Hazaras, who suffer frequent attacks.
