At least 32 killed in an attack on a Thai kindergarten

First modification:

At least 32 people, including 23 children, were killed when a man armed with guns and a knife broke into a kindergarten in Nong Bua Lamphu province, a Thai police spokesman said on Thursday. The attacker committed suicide.

A former police officer armed with a gun and a knife stormed a kindergarten in northeastern Thailand on Thursday and shot dead at least 32 people, including children, before killing himself with his family, police said.

The attacker, armed with a shotgun, a pistol and a knife, opened fire on the kindergarten in Nong Bua Lam Phu province at around 12:30 p.m. (0530 GMT) before fleeing the scene in a vehicle, the force said.

“The death toll from the shooting … is at least 30 people,” said Anucha Burapachaisri, a spokeswoman for the Thai prime minister’s office, according to an initial preliminary.

Police Colonel Jakkapat Vijitraithaya, from the province where the attack took place, identified the attacker as Panya Khamrab, a police lieutenant colonel who he said was fired from the force last year for drug use.

The mass murder comes less than a month after an active-duty army officer shot dead two colleagues at a military training base in the capital Bangkok.

Although Thailand has a high rate of gun ownership, mass shootings are extremely rare.
