Tens of thousands of people demonstrated this Sunday in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, to demand the resignation of the current Romanian president, Klaus Iohannis, and ask for the investiture of the candidate Calin Georgescu, after the Constitutional Court, alluding to Russian interference , annulled the result of the first round of the presidential elections in which the candidate considered close to Moscow had won.
The protest, organized by the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), has brought together tens of thousands of citizens dissatisfied with the decision of the Constitutional Court, to demand the resumption of the second round of the elections, after Georgescu won. by surprise the first round with about 24 percent of the votes.
Around 30,000 people participated in the march that culminated in Bucharest’s University Square, according to the organizers. The news agency Aleph News, for its part, points to around 20,000 attendees at this protest, which did not include the presence of presidential candidate Georgescu.
Protesters demand that the Constitutional Court revoke its decision to annul the first round of the presidential elections at the end of November and order new elections, a measure that the court took amid accusations of Russian interference and after the declassification of intelligence reports in that sense, although he did not specify the reasons.
Romania’s Intelligence services claimed that almost 800 Tiktok accounts created by a “foreign state” in 2016 were suddenly activated during the campaign to support Georgescu, while another 25,000 were created two weeks before the elections.
Georgescu, who claimed not to have spent any money on his campaign, saw his messages – which were not marked as political content – spread massively through these thousands of TikTok accounts, thus violating Romanian electoral laws.
