March 26 (EUROPA PRESS) –
At least 19 people have died after a boat sank off the coast of Tunisia while trying to cross the Mediterranean.
The spokesman for the non-governmental organization Tunisian Forum for Social and Economic Rights (FTDES), Romdhane ben Amor, who reported on Sunday the balance of fatalities, denounced that “it is difficult to count the number of victims and disappeared during this tragic week”.
Ben Amor, through a statement on his Facebook profile, has also highlighted “the political and moral responsibility of European policies”.
Tunisia has become in recent years one of the main departure points for boats with which migrants from the country and those arriving from sub-Saharan Africa attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) states on its website that so far this year more than 430 people have died or have been reported missing when trying to cross the Mediterranean, a figure that in 2022 rose to nearly 2,400, the highest since 2017.
