At least 18 killed by landslides due to torrential rains in Uganda

May 6. (EUROPE PRESS) –

At least 18 people have died in the Kisoro district of southwestern Uganda after their homes were buried in a landslide triggered by torrential rains in recent days in East Africa.

Six of the bodies belong to the same family, whose house was buried, and more victims are expected to be found as emergency workers and locals continue to dig through the mud, the Uganda Red Cross has reported on its account. Twitter.

The Kisoro district local government has blamed climate change and poor agricultural and soil management practices for the landslide.

Likewise, the Deputy Minister for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, David Bahati, has stated that his government is “doing everything possible to ensure that the situation improves, at least temporarily, while we prepare a lasting solution”.

Bahati not only confirmed the death of almost two dozen people, but also the destruction of the road that connects the towns of Katuna and Muko, near the tourist Lake Bunyonyi (southwest).

Torrential rains have also left at least 127 dead these days in Rwanda, a neighboring country of Uganda.
