At least 18 Israeli soldiers injured in Hezbollah drone attack in Golan Heights

1 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least 18 Israeli soldiers were injured on Sunday in a drone strike by the Lebanese Shiite militia party Hezbollah against the Rawiya barracks in the occupied Golan Heights, as clashes between the two sides threaten to escalate the conflict in the Gaza Strip to a regional level.

“As a result of the fall of an explosive unmanned aerial vehicle in the northern area of the Golan Heights today, one soldier of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has been seriously injured and 17 others were lightly injured. The soldiers have been taken to a hospital for medical treatment,” reads an IDF statement.

For its part, Hezbollah has claimed the attack through a statement in which it has indicated that it has launched “an air attack against a squadron of assault marches against the headquarters of the armored battalions of the 188 Brigade in the Rawiya barracks “.

“The resistance has attacked the command building of the barracks and the places where its officers and soldiers were stationed, attacking them directly, causing fires and confirmed victims,” according to the Lebanese television channel Al Manar, which is related to the group.

The Lebanese group also claimed a series of attacks on Sunday, saying it also hit the Beit Hilal barracks, the Pranit barracks, the Beranit barracks, and a military building in the town of Metula. It also attacked artillery positions in Khirbet Mar (near the border) and a position in the Israeli-occupied Sheba Farms.

During the day, the IDF bombed “targets of the terrorist organization in southern Lebanon,” such as an observation post in the Markaba area and a launch pad in the Aita al Shab area, from where one of the attacks was carried out. They also fired artillery “to eliminate a threat in several areas” in southern Lebanon.

The Israeli Army and Hezbollah – backed by Iran and which has significant political weight in Lebanon – have been engaged in a series of clashes since October 8, a day after the attacks perpetrated against Israeli territory by the Islamic Resistance Movement ( Hamas) and other Palestinian factions, which left nearly 1,200 dead and about 240 kidnapped.

Tensions in the area have been rising since October 2023, after Hezbollah resumed attacks against Israel following attacks by the Palestinian Hamas movement. Violence has escalated in recent weeks and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently warned that all scenarios were being considered.
