At least 16 people have died in a fire that broke out on Wednesday afternoon at a 14-storey shopping centre in the city of Zigong, in the province of Sichuan, which is in southwestern China.

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was started by construction work at the building and the specific circumstances are being investigated, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Authorities have indicated that no one is still trapped in the building, after completing the rescue operation at around 3:00 a.m. (local time). The injured, of whom there is no account, have been taken to hospital for treatment. The emergency services received the alert at around 6:00 p.m.
