At least 16 people have died and 29 have been injured, eight of them seriously, in a new mass traffic accident in Turkey, less than 24 hours after the chain collision that occurred in the Gaziantep region, and which leaves for now the same number of deaths.
The accident on this occasion took place in the city of Derik, Mardin province, in the southeast of the country, when a driver lost control of the truck he was driving before running over a crowd, the Turkish Health Minister lamented. Fahrettin Koca.
“We are devastated by this second accident,” lamented the minister, who explained that the vehicle’s brakes did not seem to work at the time the driver was trying to regain control of the vehicle, reports the ‘Daily Sabah’.
In addition, and as was the case in Gaziantep, another truck coming from behind hit the first medical team that responded and citizens gathered nearby.
The incident in Gaziantep, in the south of the country, began when a bus overturned and slid some 200 meters before crashing in the place where emergency services had concentrated to respond to a previous incident. There was also a press vehicle in the area, according to the Anatolia agency.
Gaziantep Governor Davut Gul confirmed the deaths of at least 16 people, including three firefighters, four health workers and two journalists. In addition, 21 people were injured.
