The police officer who shot is in custody for intentional homicide
June 28 () –
At least thirteen people have been arrested this Tuesday night after a protest took place over the death of a 17-year-old teenager at the hands of the French Police in the Nanterre district, on the outskirts of Paris.
The riot squad of the French Police, the Republican Security Companies (CRS), has been deployed in the area. The police headquarters has referred, however, to a “contained” situation with interventions by its agents in the streets, according to the BFMTV chain.
Since the afternoon, there have been protests in the streets of Nanterre, breaking street furniture and garbage cans. The Firemen have installed a large security perimeter because they feared an explosion due to the presence of gas cylinders.
Before 8:00 p.m., the agents used tear gas to push back the protesters, who have erected barricades to prevent entry to the neighborhood and have chanted slogans against the Police, as reported by the aforementioned chain.
These protests have taken place after a young man died on Tuesday morning when he was shot by the Police at a traffic control. The agents had accused the driver of running over a police officer, however, this version has been denied by a video posted on social networks in which the vehicle appears stopped with the agent in the window pointing at the victim.
The Nanterre Prosecutor’s Office, which has opened an investigation for attempted murder by an authority, has announced the arrest of one of the agents, who is in custody. The family has announced, through their lawyers, their intention to file a complaint. One for homicide, directed at the police officer who shot, and another for false public deed, collects the TF1 channel.
The mayor of Nanterre, Patrick Jarry, asked this afternoon that “the circumstances of the tragedy be clarified as soon as possible”, asking the population for “calm”. The City Council has made available to the Police the images captured by the video surveillance cameras of the scene.
Jarry, who has transferred his condolences to the loved ones of the deceased, has appealed “to each and every one of them for restraint and dignity, despite the legitimate emotion that this tragedy arouses.”
