Around 125 people have died this year on the pilgrimage to Mecca, in Saudi Arabia, due to high temperatures and exhaustion, according to reports provided by several governments, although it is feared that the figure is much higher.

The head of the mission of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism for the 2024 pilgrimage, Aiman Abdelazim, has confirmed to the newspaper ‘Al Ahram’ eight deaths and has stated that he has located another 142 people reported missing, while another 27 Egyptians have been hospitalized.
For their part, the Libyan authorities have told the newspaper ‘Al Wasat’ that six citizens of the country have died during the rituals of the pilgrimage to Mecca, one of the five pillars of Islam, which must be fulfilled by all Muslims physically and economically capable of carrying it out at least once in their life.
In addition, the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Bangladesh has pointed to the death of 21 Bangladeshi pilgrims, according to the newspaper ‘Daily Sun’, while four Russian citizens have also died during the pilgrimage, as reported by media in the Eurasian country.
Saudi Arabian authorities confirmed on Monday that temperatures had exceeded 51 degrees Celsius at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, which is why they have advised the nearly 1.8 million pilgrims to use umbrellas to avoid the sun and to drink plenty of water to stay sufficiently hydrated.
