MOGADISHU, Oct. 1 (DPA/EP) –
At least 12 civilians, including Kenyan workers, have been killed in a possible attack by the jihadist organization Al Shabaab in the Somali province of Gedo, in the south of the country, according to authorities.
The workers were drilling a water well to alleviate the drought that has plagued the region for months. Four of the victims were reportedly Kenyan technicians drilling the well in Gedo province.
The incident took place in the town of Gariley, between the districts of Bardhere and Eelwak, as confirmed by the governor of Gedo, Ahmed Bulle.
The attackers also set fire to the bulldozers used to drill the well, essential for the population of one of the most deteriorated regions of southern Somalia, which is suffering its worst drought in 40 years.
