The Pakistan Army spokesman, Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, has raised to 102 the number of people who are being tried in military courts after the violent protests that broke out in the country on May 9.
“All those who planned and facilitated the protests will be punished in accordance with the Constitution and laws of Pakistan, regardless of which political party, institution or social status they are associated with,” he said, according to the newspaper ‘Dawn’.
Among those tried for the “disappointing” and “reprehensible” events in May, which for Chaudhry represent “a black chapter” in the history of Pakistan, there are at least three members of the Army, including a lieutenant general.
Chaudhry has also reported that “disciplinary processes” have been carried out after a “detailed accountability process” against at least three major generals and seven brigade members who failed to comply with security orders during the demonstrations.
Several military installations suffered property damage during the protests, which erupted after former Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested in a corruption case. In response, the Army was deployed in several cities of the country to contain the protesters. The current ‘premier’, Shehbaz Sharif, said that the events of May 9 were a “show of a terrorist and anti-Pakistani agenda.”
