() — At least 10 people were buried this Sunday in an avalanche near the mountain towns of Lech and Zurs, in Austria, according to a statement from the Austrian Press Agency.
The avalanche occurred on Sunday afternoon in the villages open ski area.
One person has been rescued so far according to police, the agency reported.
“Ten winter sports fans” were entombed, according to the statement.
A search and rescue operation is underway involving more than 100 people, including avalanche search dogs and helicopters.
“We are doing everything possible to save winter sports enthusiasts,” the Lech City Council spokesman was quoted as saying by the Austrian Press Agency. “Reflectors were requested to continue the search in the dark,” the statement added.
