At least ten people have died this Monday in a large fire that took place overnight in a hotel in the city of Wellington, New Zealand, while another 20 people are missing.
The emergency services went to the hotel before 00:30 (local time), after a fire broke out on the third floor of the building.
New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has conveyed his condolences to the families and victims of the incident, stating that New Zealanders “woke up this morning to tragic events.”
Hipkins, who has indicated that investigations into the fire have begun, has asserted that the fire has been “incredibly traumatic” for rescue services.
Housing Minister Megan Woods has indicated that the building met required standards and had been inspected earlier in the year.
