The telecommunications company said the FBI is investigating and at least one person has been arrested after AT&T call records were copied from his or her workspace to a third-party cloud platform, a significant breach of consumers’ communication records.
AT&T said in a statement that the compromised data includes call and text log files for nearly all AT&T wireless and landline customers, as well as mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) customers who interacted with the mobile numbers between May 2022 and October 2022, but does not contain the content of calls or texts, or personal information such as Social Security numbers.
AT&T, in a statement, said that some of the stolen data included records as recent as January 2, 2023. But it ruled out making customer information publicly available.
The Federal Communications Commission said it also has an ongoing investigation.
The records identify the telephone numbers with which a wireless number interacted during these periods and the aggregate duration of the calls. A subset of the records includes one or more cell site identification numbers.
AT&T said it has shut down the illegal hotspot and will notify its customers of the incident. The company assured Expansion No AT&T Mexico customers were affected by the hack, as the incident occurred in the United States.
