Asian companies will migrate to the cloud in 2023, according to Alibaba

Asian companies will accelerate their migration to the cloud this year, According to a survey Conducted by Alibaba Cloud and global research company Nielsen IQ.

More than 80% of cloud users in Asia plan to complete a full cloud migration within two years, and 84% plan to increase their investment in cloud technology to support business growth, according to data of the survey carried out based on the responses of 1,000 cloud strategists from companies in eight markets in Asia.

“Cloud adoption has become a prerequisite for business success, and our customers are embracing a diversified cloud strategy to drive business growth in the digital age,” said Selina Yuan, President of International Business from Alibaba Cloud.

The gaming sector will see the largest increase in cloud investment, followed by the media and telecommunications sector. As more companies embrace digital innovations like generative AI, they will need cloud computing resources and infrastructure.

“This is an extremely important opportunity and we intend to make the most of it,” said Daniel Zhang, Chairman and CEO of Alibaba, during the third quarter results conference call.

The survey showed that Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore are early adopters of cloud services. Businesses in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines are investing the most in the cloud, driven by increased use of cloud-based software and services during the pandemic.

The pandemic has prompted companies to move their critical businesses online.

According to the survey, more than a third of companies stated that they expect to complete a full migration to the cloud in the next six months.

A growing number of Asian companies are embracing a hybrid cloud that uses a mix of on-premises, private cloud, and public cloud services for a more flexible mix of cloud computing resources. They are opting for the hybrid cloud to get customized cloud services and security support.

“The variety of cloud strategies adopted in Asia indicates that more and more companies are looking for robust, resilient, secure and flexible infrastructure to digitize their business,” Yuan added.
