VIETNAM

Vietnamese President To Lam was appointed General Secretary of the Communist Partythe top national official, replacing Nguyen Phu Trong, who died a fortnight ago. Lam, 67, had temporarily taken over the party leadership on July 18, a day before Trong’s death. Party delegates unanimously supported Lam’s appointment. Addressing the delegates, Lam pledged to inherit and promote Trong’s legacy, adding that “work will continue to be done resolutely to fight corruption.”

Gaza-Israel

He 63% of the buildings in the Gaza Strip have been damaged or destroyed since the outbreak of the war in Gaza on 7 October. “UNOSAT’s latest building damage assessment, based on satellite imagery… reveals that 151,265 structures have been affected in the Strip,” the UN satellite centre said. Of these, 30 per cent were destroyed and 12 per cent severely damaged.”

Three people, including a Nepalese pastor associated with the South Korean congregation, were arrested on July 24 and remain in police custody for disturbing “public order, decency and morality.”
