November 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The ASEAN leaders have agreed this Friday to talk with “all the parties involved”, which also makes implicit reference to the Burmese opposition, within the framework of the peace plan designed by the organization as the main international mediator in the Burmese conflict.
ASEAN has indicated in a statement that it will seek “all parties involved” to adhere to and implement the ‘road map’ in a “flexible and informal” compromise to be led by the ASEAN president’s envoy in Burma.
Thus, they highlight “the neutrality inherent to his mandate”, for which the aforementioned envoy will be in charge of “restoring peace and stability” in accordance with the so-called five-point consensus, which seeks to reduce violence in Burmese territory.
Said plan includes, among other points, the immediate end of the violence, the implementation of a constructive dialogue between all interested parties to seek peaceful solutions, as well as the work of the special envoy of the ASEAN president.
In this way, ASEAN has pledged to “find a peaceful and lasting solution to the current crisis”, since the situation in the country “remains critical and fragile” with “growing violence” that affects “the efforts of construction” of the organization.
The Government of National Unity of Burma, loyal to the former ‘de facto leader’, Aung San Suu Kyi, has been open to dialogue with ASEAN and has offered its “full cooperation” ahead of new meetings in November.
For his part, Indonesian President Joko Widodo has proposed to ASEAN leaders that Burmese Army representatives be barred from participating in the bloc’s functions beyond major summits.
