The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has decided this Tuesday not to invite the leader of the Burmese junta, General Min Aung Hlaing, who has led the country since the coup d’état, to the next regional summits scheduled for this year. which took place in February 2021.
Cambodia, which holds the bloc’s temporary Presidency, has confirmed that it has sent invitations to all member states except Burma, according to information collected by the newspaper ‘The Irrawaddy’.
The measure takes place after the Asian country failed to implement the ‘road map’ drawn up by ASEAN itself to reduce violence in Burmese territory.
ASEAN is scheduled to hold two summits next month in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. The exclusion of the Burmese junta is a blow to its leader since he has shown a strong interest in gaining international recognition and legitimacy since the military coup.
The organization’s countries have repeatedly asked Burma to send “apolitical” representatives. Chum Sunry, spokesman for the Cambodian Foreign Ministry, has confirmed that they have once again requested the sending of representatives without political affiliation for the upcoming summits.
