The special envoy of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for Burma, Prak Sokhonn, has recognized that “not even Superman” could solve the political crisis in Burma after the February 2021 coup d’état and the subsequent insurgency unleashed.
“I told them at yesterday’s meeting about initiatives to help Burma… I told them I’m sorry, I’m just a special envoy. I’m not a superhero. I’m not a Superman. I don’t think even Superman could solve the problem.” from Burma,” the special envoy said at a press conference this Saturday.
The ASEAN envoy has pointed out that “everything cannot be resolved in one meeting, or in two meetings, or in years of meetings.” “Negotiations last for years, like the Burma issue,” he argued from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, according to Mizzima TV.
Prak Sokhonn, who is also Cambodia’s foreign minister, has traveled to Burma twice since the coup. “After two visits from the special envoy, only two visits, there are those who begin to lose patience and ask for results”, he lamented.
In addition, he has warned that he will not make the third visit to Naypyidaw that was scheduled for September, “especially if there are more executions.”
The Burmese military junta carried out a coup on February 1, 2021, alleging that the elections held in November had been fraudulent. The results once again gave victory to the party of the now former ‘de facto leader’ Aung San Suu Kyi, the National League for Democracy.
After the coup, the Army has unleashed a campaign of repression and the numerous armed ethnic groups have been reactivated. In addition, an armed opposition to the coup has been formed.
