Honduras has not escaped the migratory wave of Venezuelans throughout the region and authorities in Tegucigalpa have reported that more than 43,315 irregular migrants from that nation entered the Central American nation so far this year through October.
This situation was cause for alert for the National Commissioner for Human Rights (CONADEH), according to the agency’s report published on Monday.
“The Honduran State must guarantee that the routes used are safe and that protection is provided to people in human mobility and not make illegal charges from any point of view,” recommended the director of the CONADEH Office, Ricardo López.
The entity is based on official data that indicates that “Honduras is experiencing an unprecedented migration crisis” because from the beginning of 2022 to mid-October, the entry of 124,865 migrants from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Central America and South America was registered. .
Of the total number of irregular migrants, some 44,315, representing 35%, are of Venezuelan nationality.
According to CONADEH, there have recently been complaints from migrants about alleged abuses by the authorities, as well as from individuals who have diverted them to highly dangerous routes for their lives.
Migrants use the Central American route to reach the Mexican border and from there to the United States as their final destination, mainly.
Last week the White House established a new migratory model exclusively for Venezuelans by granting them 24,000 visas through an online registry, however, thousands of them would have been trapped in the Darién Gap, a dangerous jungle pass between Colombia and Panama.
