Arrested in Belgium a suspect of participating in attacks in Iraq in which 376 people died

BRUSSELS, May 5. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Federal Judicial Police of Brussels (Belgium) has arrested a suspect of having participated in several bomb attacks in the capital of Iraq, Baghdad, in 2009 and 2010 in which at least 376 people died and more than 2,300 were injured, according to The Belgian Prosecutor’s Office reported this Friday.

It is believed that the suspect, an Iraqi national and born in 1979, was part of a terrorist cell belonging to Al Qaeda, and that the attacks were carried out, allegedly, using car bombs against various government buildings.

The arrest of the suspect occurred this past Wednesday, May 3, in the town of Hasselt, located to the east of the Belgian capital, as a result of a joint operation between the authorities of Brussels and Antwerp and an investigation initiated in 2020.

The judge accused him of several murders with terrorist intent, participation in the activities of a terrorist group, war crimes and crimes against humanity and will appear this Friday before the Mechelen council chamber, which will decide whether or not to keep him in custody.
