Arrested 83 suspects in the gang rape of eight models who were recording a music video in South Africa

The South African Police have reported the arrest of a total of 83 suspects for the rape of eight models who were recording a music video in Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg.

On Friday, 67 suspects were detained and another 16 have been arrested on Saturday. Two suspects have been shot dead by police, reports South African public television SABC, citing Police Commissioner Fred Kekana.

“We have been able to arrest another 16 people, one of them from Malawi and one from Cameroon. We also have four Zimbabweans and four citizens of Lesotho and seven Mozambicans,” he explained. Kekana has indicated that this Saturday they received a citizen notice that allowed these arrests.

The attack occurred on Thursday near a mine, when the assailants robbed the production team and raped eight women, models between 19 and 35 years old.

The South African president has condemned this “horrible” attack. South Africa, a country of 60 million inhabitants, has recorded 10,818 rapes in the first six months of the year, but the authorities estimate that the true figure is even higher due to the lack of reporting of these cases.
