Sep. 6 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Armenian authorities have denounced on Tuesday the death of a soldier due to shots fired by the Azerbaijani Army in a border area and have accused Baku of attacking “a combat position” in the eastern part of the country.
The Armenian Ministry of Defense has indicated in a statement published on its website that the victim has been identified as Sergeant Arman Gagiki Sargsián and has stated that “materials are being prepared by the investigation department” to clarify what happened.
“The Ministry of Defense shares the deep sorrow for this loss and expresses its support for Sargsián’s family and the rest of the soldiers,” he pointed out, without the Azerbaijani authorities, who in recent days have accused Armenia of firing at the border, have spoken about what happened.
Armenia and Azerbaijan staged a confrontation in 2020 to take control of Nagorno Karabakh, a territory with a majority Armenian population that has been a focus of conflict since it decided to separate in 1988 from the Azerbaijan region integrated into the Soviet Union.
Hostilities between the two countries lasted for six weeks and left thousands dead. They finally ceased when the two countries reached a Russian-brokered ceasefire agreement, allowing Russian peacekeepers to settle in Nagorno-Karabakh for a period of five years.
