Armenia denounces an attack by Azerbaijan against its positions on the common border

The Armenian Ministry of Defense has denounced this Thursday an attack by the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan against its military positions located in the eastern part of the common border without any possible victims having been registered.

“On July 28, around 12 noon, Azerbaijani Armed Forces units opened fire with rifles of different calibers at Armenian military positions located in the eastern part of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border,” reads a statement. released by the Armenian Ministry of Defense.

The spokesman for the Armenian Defense Ministry, Aram Torosyan, has reported that the fire of the Azerbaijani units has been silenced by the retaliatory actions of the Armenian side.

Likewise, from the Armenian Executive they have assured that they have not been accounted for on the Armenian side.

On July 4, it was Azerbaijan that denounced an attack by the Armenian Army on the common border.


The Azeri Ministry of Defense indicated in a statement that “positions of the Azerbaijani Army in Kalbajar were subjected to fire”, before detailing that the event took place “in the Zarkand settlement, in the Basarkechar region”.

Armenia and Azerbaijan staged a confrontation in 2020 to take control of Nagorno Karabakh, a territory with a majority Armenian population that has been a focus of conflict since it decided to separate in 1988 from the Azerbaijan region integrated into the Soviet Union.

Hostilities between the two nations lasted for six weeks and left thousands dead. They finally ceased when the two countries reached a Russian-brokered ceasefire agreement, allowing Russian peacekeepers to settle in Nagorno-Karabakh for a period of five years.
