Argentina votes against a resolution that promotes the prevention of digital violence against women and girls

( Spanish) –– This Thursday, at the United Nations General Assembly, Argentina was the only country to vote against a resolution that promotes the intensification of efforts to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.

Of the 184 countries that participated in the vote, there were 170 votes in favor and 13 abstentions. Israel and the United States positioned themselves in favor of the initiative, while Iran, Russia, Nicaragua and North Korea, among others, made up the list of countries that remained neutral regarding the initiative.

Argentina, on the other hand, chose a position against it after arguing that the resolution contains ambiguous terms such as “hate speech”, “misinformation” and “disinformation” that could be used “abusively” to restrict the same freedom of expression “that they claim to protect.” ”.

Days ago, Argentina adopted the same position in a resolution on the rights of indigenous peoples in which it also turned out to be the only country to vote against.
