Shortly before, the British authorities for the Falklands have acknowledged that there may be certain “concerns” in the territory after the British Government has returned the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, but have noted that “the legal and historical contexts” of these two archipelagos They are different. These statements come after the governments of the United Kingdom and Mauritius have announced a historic agreement, reached after two years of negotiations, according to which London will return the Chagos archipelago, colonized more than half a century ago, to the African country, a fact that It caused the displacement of the entire population of the islands.

The agreement will also allow the Diego García military base to continue to be operated jointly by the United Kingdom and the United States “for an initial period of 99 years.”
