Support for Chilean President Gabriel Boric fell sharply amid a deteriorating economy, according to a public opinion poll released Wednesday that also saw a rise in disapproval of the president that in March he will celebrate his first year of government.
According to the study by the Center for Public Studies (CEP), support for the progressive president reached 24% in the November-December poll, below the 32% registered in the previous one, from April-May 2022.
Disapproval, for its part, increased from 49% to 61% in this study, which interviewed 1,441 people in person in the last two months of 2022, with an estimated sampling error of ±2.8%.
Boric took command in March of last year and his government has had to deal with a slowdown in economic activity and an increase in inflation, political instability resulting from a constitutional process, as well as an increase in violent crimes, although with rates below those of other countries in the region.
“The reasons are multi-causal, but we see that the economic situation is an important issue, since there is a deterioration in expectations. Associated with that, is the increase in concern about crime,” said the coordinator of the public opinion program of the CEP, Carmen Le Foulon, when presenting the results.
“Those are two important aspects that affect its approval,” he added.
Other polls, such as the weekly Cadem, also showed that Boric’s management approval fell sharply in the past year since he took office. At the end of December, his approval rating was 30% according to that poll, down from 48% in March.
