The inaugural presentation of the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 just finished. We are talking about the first day of the highly anticipated event for developers of the company led by Tim Cook.

As the rumors suggested, artificial intelligence (AI) has been the main protagonist of the day, but many other developments related to the Cupertino company’s systems and services have also appeared on the scene.

At Xataka we have covered the event live, so below you will find a summary of all the news. Some of the ads are also accompanied by links to our dedicated articles.

Apple has also expanded the availability of the Apple Vision Pro. The company’s glasses will arrive in China, Japan, Singapore, Australia, Germany, Canada, France and the United Kingdom. It should be noted that Spain has not been included in this deployment.

iOS 18. The iPhone operating system is updated with more customization options, which not only allow us to change the system color but also color the icons in harmony. The Control Center has also been renewed, with more options so that users can adapt it to their needs.

At the privacy level we will have a folder of hidden applications protected by FaceID. The news also reaches Mail, Maps, Wallet, Journal and Photos. iOS 18 launches a “Game Mode” that improves the gaming experience mainly when using an external controller and headphones.

watchOS 11. Apple says it has designed a new way to rate workouts. “Training Mode” works with calorimetry data, such as heart rate and weight, to help us achieve goals. The Health application, for its part, will show important information about the pregnancy.

iPadOS 18. The iPad operating system now receives several of the new features of iOS, mainly those related to customization. The Cupertino company, however, has also updated some of the integrated applications, such as TV, with more fluid animations. The system will also allow us to control another person’s iPad to provide assistance.

Ios 18

Surprisingly, years after its launch, the system finally has a Calculator app. This comes with some advantages in relation to the iPhone application. For example, we can write operations directly with the Apple Pencil. Calculator capabilities will also be available in the Notes app.

macOS 15. The new version of the Mac operating system is called macOS Sequoia. The system embraces many of the new features we saw previously, but there are also specific new features. Continuity allows us to duplicate the iPhone on the Mac. It will allow us to see the content of our smartphone on our computer and interact with it and its applications.

On the other hand, the Mac will be able to receive notifications from the iPhone. When you click on a mobile notification from the Mac, macOS will show us the iPhone screen. The joint work between devices goes further. Duplication will allow us to drag files between devices.

In relation to productivity, the system will allow us to replace the background of our webcam. Passwords, for its part, gives us the possibility of storing and managing our passwords in the Apple ecosystem.

Games

At the gaming level, Apple says it has managed to create “a unified gaming platform.” Game Porting Toolkit 2 aims to bring the most advanced Windows games to the Mac, iPhone and iPad. Ubisoft has announced that ‘Assassin’s Creed: Shadows’ is coming to the Mac this year. We are talking about a title that will also land on PC and consoles in 2024.

Beta versions of the announced systems will be available starting today.

Apple Intelligence. The company has announced a “personal intelligence system.” Apple says that its AI will rely on users’ personal context and that one of its main advantages is natural language understanding.

Apple’s AI will allow us to create images. For example, we can take a photo of a person to create a message for their birthday with their caricatured face. Apple Intelligence will be able to do tasks for us. We can ask you things like “play the podcast my wife sent me the other day.” It may process personal data to help us do our daily tasks.

Apple says that this functionality does not collect personal data and that everything runs locally. This has been possible due to the performance offered by devices equipped with A17 Pro and M1 processors onwards.

Apple

Private Cloud Compute. Some of the user data ends up reaching servers in the cloud. For this reason, Apple says it has created Private Cloud Compute to “extend iPhone privacy to the cloud.” It is a private cloud that comes into the picture when users need more computing power to perform some of the AI-powered tasks. In this case, requests are processed in Apple data centers under this concept.

Siri. AI has also driven a revamp of Siri. The assistant is now able to understand us when we speak to it naturally, so we will get rid of the few commands that we could use until now. Siri will also feed on information from our applications (also from third parties). We can ask: “Show me my photos of Stacy in New York wearing pink.”

Apple claims that Apple will improve over time as it learns from our habits. It will create a semantic index to support its functions. The Cupertino company gives us another example. If we are filling out a form and need to add our driver’s license, we can ask the assistant to upload a photo of our license to the gallery to easily add it. These new features will come to the iPhone, iPad and Mac.
