Manzana has announced the number of monthly active users of its official application store, App Store, in the countries of the European Union, for the different operating systems that it develops, with an average of 101 million people who They used iOS version.
The technology company has shared these figures to comply with the European Union Digital Services Law, a set of mandatory regulations for large companies that offer digital services.
With it, it seeks to guarantee the protection of the rights of users of the member countries, as well as to promote innovation, growth and competitiveness of these platforms in the single market.
This regulation It also seeks to promote transparency and accountability, which is why it requires online service providers such as Apple, Twitter or LinkedIn to publish the number of users they register in Europe.
In this way, it is capable of adapting the specific risk mitigation measures, as stated in its article 24, which states that these organizations must update this information “at least once every six months” and that this should be public.
In the case of ‘very large online platforms and search engines’, ie those with at least 45 million users, the Commission requires that a number be provided, not an estimate.
To comply with this regulation, Apple has quantified the number of users in the app store for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS; as well as those who use their platforms Apple Books and Apple Podcast, in all member countries.
The version of the App Store that registered the greatest number of users was that of iOS, with 101 million active users. It is followed by the App Store for iPadOS (23 million) and macOS (6 million), while tvOS registers one million. Below this last figure are the App Store for watchOS, Apple Books and subscriptions to Apple Podcasts.
The company has qualified that the published data corresponds to the six-month period prior to January 31, 2023 and that it considers each version of the App Store as a different online platform and that iOS App Store only it can be classified as ‘Very Large Online Platform’ (VLOP).
Despite this, it has assured that it intends “on a completely voluntary basis to align each of the existing versions of the App Store, including those that currently do not meet the threshold of said designation”, to offer greater transparency and “to protect consumers of illegal content”.
