Available in traditional versions base/Plus and Pro/Pro MaxThe new iPhone 16s arrive with a design that is very familiar at first glance, but it hides important changes beyond its new Ceramic Shield glass (up to twice as hard as any other phone glass, Apple claims), such as the presence of two new buttons in the case of the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus.
Specifically, the more affordable iPhone 16 models get the same Action button that debuted on last year’s iPhone 15 Pro. This switch allows for launching user-programmable shortcuts and apps, and shouldn’t be confused with the new camera button.
Far from being limited to just a simple shutter release, this button has a capacitive surface that detects the pressure of the press in two different phases. Thus, gently tapping on one side or the other of its surface or doing it twice in a row launches a quick camera configuration menu to select the zoom or the type of shooting, while a firm press is used to take the photo itself.
Depending on the model, the camera also benefits from very significant improvements. The base iPhone 16 and Plus now have two 48-megapixel sensors that function as four different ones, allowing you to alternate between standard, ultrawide, macro and 2x optical zoom via cropping.
On the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, meanwhile, the 48MP Fusion camera goes even further, allowing you to record 4K120 video with Dolby Vision and high-quality sound using four microphones, all while benefiting from a new ultrawide sensor with autofocus. In addition, the new Pro models can take “spatial photos” for viewing with Apple Vision Pro.
As for the displays, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus still use 60Hz OLED panels, although the maximum brightness now rises to 2,000 nits. In the case of the Pro models, the main change is in the size, as they grow slightly, reaching 6.3 and 6.9 inches (the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max have 6.1 and 6.7 inches, respectively).
As regards the chipsetthe new A18 and A18 Pro processors arrive to lead once again in general performance (the CPU is 30% more powerful than the A16 Bionic) and graphics (with a 40% advantage). Manufactured at 3 nm, they integrate a 16-core NPU that facilitates the execution of very heavy AI tasks without having to outsource them to the cloud, taking greater advantage (especially in the case of the Pro models) of the Apple Intelligence platform.
Finally, all iPhone 16 models support faster, more efficient Qi2 wireless charging, with the Pro models also seeing a significant improvement in battery life. Apple claims that its battery life is the longest of any iPhone, with up to 27 and 33 hours of video playback on the Pro and Pro Max models, respectively.
