The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has called on Burma to immediately launch “an inclusive process to return to the democratic transition” and to release all political prisoners.
Guterres has shown this Friday his concern about the political, security, human rights and humanitarian situation in a country that, he has assured, “is sinking more and more into catastrophe”.
“I condemn the increasing levels of violence, the disproportionate use of force and the terrible situation of Human Rights,” he said at the Southeast Asia (ASEAN) summit.
In addition, it has recalled that indiscriminate attacks against civilians can constitute war crimes under International Law and has reiterated its request to return to the path towards “lasting peace and security”.
In that sense, he has urged all ASEAN member countries to seek a unified strategy for this country that focuses on the needs and aspirations of the people of Burma. “I urge ASEAN countries to keep borders open and provide protection for refugees from Burma. No refugee should be forced back into suffering and danger,” she said.
Likewise, the international representative has focused on the million Rohingya refugees – a Muslim minority that lives essentially in the Rajine state – and has asked that the authorities carry out urgent action to guarantee the conditions for their voluntary return. .
