Anticipation ahead of Donald Trump’s speech marks final day of Republican National Convention in Milwaukee

Former President Donald Trump’s speech will close the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Thursday. Anticipation is growing among his supporters, who are hoping to hear the party’s presidential candidate’s remarks, focusing on several key issues of his platform, such as the economy and crime.

“The message for him is going to be the same (that he has said in his campaign rallies). He wants to fix the economy, obviously, to have less crime, inflation, lower inflation,” he told the newspaper. “He is a brave man, he is a warrior, but I also saw him as more humble. There is something that happens to you when you come very close to death, that changes. So, I feel that now he is going to be a person who is going to attract more people because he is going to speak a little more humbly,” he told the VOA Peruvian Miriam Cano, member of the Latinos for Trump organization.

For Alfonso Aguilar, a conservative analyst and director of Hispanic Engagement at the American Principles Project, the attack also changed the candidate’s vision. “He already said he was going to scrap his speech and write a new speech focused on unity,” he said.

“I think it’s clear that he is positioned to be the new president of the United States and we want a president who will unite everyone as we deal with these major economic crises, the crisis at the border, the crises in the world, all these wars that have started because our enemies have seen the weakness of this president and this administration,” he added, referring to current Democratic President Joe Biden, Trump’s main rival in the race for the White House.

Aguilar insisted on the VOA that Americans need a united country. “And I think the president’s message is one of true inclusion, because it benefits all American workers, it’s a message of unity,” he concluded.

Biden, for his part, has criticized the divisive speech of his predecessor, whom he has accused of having incendiary rhetoric, with proposals that will not benefit minorities and will only make the rich richer.

“Specifically, Trump and Vance want to advance the agenda of the wealthiest people in this country. Those people, those billionaires, are Donald Trump’s priority. People like us, who work every day, who are wanting to educate our children and work every day, we are not Donald Trump’s priority, but we are Biden Harris’ priority,” she said in Milwaukee. The 2024 Republican National Convention It started on Monday, July 15 in Milwaukeejust 48 hours after the assassination attempt against the main protagonist of the event. On the same day of the attack, Trump assured that he would attend the event. During the same opening day he finally cleared up the doubts about who would be his vice president: Ohio Senator JD Vance.

Vance, 39, addressed Republican delegates for the first time Thursday night at Fiserv Forum.

“Career politicians” like President Joe Biden, Vance said, are responsible for trade policies and foreign wars that hurt communities like his own. The senator also praised Trump’s vision, in a speech specially designed to appeal to voters in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, the three states where the bitterest battle for the White House will be fought in November.

Immediately afterward, the campaign of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris issued a statement saying that “JD Vance is unprepared, unqualified, and willing to do anything Donald Trump demands.”

In a text message to voters, Harris reiterated that the Republican duo is one of the most “extreme of our time.”

The Democratic National Convention will be held in nearby Chicago from August 19 to 22. Biden, who was scheduled to attend several campaign events in Las Vegas, tested positive for Covid-19while the party is still divided over whether the veteran politician has the physical and mental capacity to face four more years in office.
