Anti-government march called by Evo Morales reaches La Paz

( Spanish) – The mobilization called by former President Evo Morales against the government of President Luis Arce arrived on Monday in La Paz, the capital of Bolivia, after a week on the road.

Morales announced on social media that the March to Save Bolivia, which left the city of Caracollo last Tuesday, had reached its destination and thanked the people of El Alto and La Paz for their warm and emotional welcome.

“This heroic and massive march that was persecuted, harassed and criminalized for defending the humble people of the country has concluded successfully,” said the former president.

There was speculation along the way that Morales would have to abandon the march to avoid the cause being linked to his quest for re-election, as the government believes, and also that his supporters had caused injuries. However, Morales remained present and repeatedly reiterated along the way that they were carrying out a peaceful movement.

The former president called for the movement to make 16 demands of the government and to express his rejection of the referendum proposed by Arce to ask citizens whether they would agree or not to extend the presidential reelection period, something that Morales believes seeks to curb his aspirations to run for the executive office again in 2025.
